Some Stories Deserve To Be Retold

Everyone knows Jessie Owens.  How many people know Luz Long?  He was one of the top German athletes who competed against him.

Not at all what I expected.   Owen’s own quote sums it up best:  “It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler… You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating on the twenty-four karat friendship that I felt for Lutz Long at that moment.” —Jesse Owens on being advised and congratulated by Luz Long at the 1936 Summer Olympics.

Side note, if you want to know how I stumbled across this, someone mentioned the crazy priest who tackled the marathoner back in the 2004 Olympics, I looked him up, found out that marathoner got the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship, checked out what that medal was, found out Luz Long got it at the 36 Olympics, which made me go “Wha??? There has to be a story behind this.”
